Okefenokee Technical College horticulture students planted a crepe myrtle and elm tree Thursday, February 18, 2010, in celebration of Georgia Arbor Day 2010. OTC President Dr. Gail Thaxton and OTC environmental horticulture instructor Mark Deal, as well as other students, were on hand to help commemorate the occasion. The official 2010 Georgia Arbor Day is Friday, February 19.
The best time to plant trees in Georgia is between the months of November and mid-March. Planting during this time allows trees a chance to become established before the hot, dry period of summer. This is why Arbor Day is celebrated every year in Georgia on the third Friday of February.
